Thomson Split-Toe Hand-Welted Custom Derby

The Thomson derby is defined by the labor-intensive hand-sewn pie-crust apron and real split-toe. This technique requires reverse skin stitching through the thickness of the leather without piercing the underside, creating a three-dimensional ridge that is a hallmark of traditional cordwainery. This is a purely manual process that ensures every pair carries a unique, organic texture.

The foundation of our shoes is a full hand-welted build. We start by carving a rib directly into a thick leather insole, creating a channel for the welt stitch. This "slow-made" approach avoids the use of glued-on canvas rib that eliminates synthetic materials and heat-activated glues, creating a natural, breathable bond that allows the shoe to flex and mold to your foot's unique anatomy over time.

The hand-lasting process is equally rigorous. Using only pliers and physical strength, the leather is pulled over the last and secured with nails, a process that takes place over several days. This ensures that the leather is properly tensioned across the waist and instep, providing a supportive arch and a secure heel lock that machine-made shoes cannot replicate.

Each pair is clicked from the finest box calf, grain leathers or reverse suede, selected for their fiber density and ability to hold a shape. The final finish is purely traditional: a closed-channel leather sole with a hand-sanded, bevelled waist. The Thomson split-toe with pie-crust apron represent the pinnacle of handwork, built to withstand the rigors of travel while maintaining a refined aesthetic.
